Genital herpes

How is it passed on?

Unprotected oral, anal or vaginal sex and direct contact of the infected area even with undamaged skin contact (the two types of the herpes virus can both cause genital herpes).  Type one is more commonly seen on the face i.e. cold sore and type two is more common in the genitals.

Symptoms

Blisters or sores around the penis and vagina.

What are the long term effects?

Herpes cannot be cured. Although you can treat the sores they are likely to come back again, particularly if you are stressed or run down.

Can you get rid of it?

Creams and lotions can be used to treat the sores.
